Last year, Australians lost over

$340 million dollars to scammers.

Of that $340 million, 6% of the money was lost because a good, honest Australian fell victim to an online dating/romance scam.

Do the math, and that works out to $20,530,578 Australian dollars stolen by online scammers. All in just one year, because of just one type of scam.

And in some cases, victims lost much more than just money…

…In the tragic case of Western Australian grandmother Jette Jacobs, [a dating scam] resulted in her death, allegedly murdered by her online lover Jesse Orowo Omokoh, who had defrauded her of more than $90,000.

More than just money: Getting caught in a romance scam could cost you your life.

Unfortunately, dating scams are just the tip of the iceberg.

In total, Australians reported being victims to over 160,000 scams last year, including:

  • 3,700 dating/romance scams;
  • 8,300 investment scams; and
  • 22,000 unexpected money (Nigerian 419) scams.
